Mini Key Fob Replacement
Today's key fobs do far more than just unlock and start your vehicle. They can also control your sunroof as well as the windows. As such, they cost a lot to replace if you lose or damage them.
It is possible to replace the fob battery yourself and save money. Here's how: Locate an opening on the key fob and then insert your tool.
Battery
Modern key fobs offer incredible functionality and convenience, but they require some care to ensure that they're functioning efficiently. As time passes, the battery in your key fob will wear out of power and will need to be replaced. You'll know that it's time change the battery when your car becomes more difficult to start or your buttons stop working.
It is easy to change the battery on your key fob. Place the key fob flat on a flat surface and press the metal buttons until they pop out. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingernail to gently pull out the two halves.
Remove the clips that hold the battery in place. If your key fob contains slots to hold the battery and replace it, you can do so by inserting an entirely new battery. Make sure that you insert the new battery in the correct orientation, plus and minus.
You'll require a CR 2032 3V coin cell, which is available in most stores that sell batteries or on the internet. The battery is usually smaller than a disc with an plus or minus symbol on it. Be cautious when handling the battery, since it can leak in the event that you use your hands with dirt. The leakage can damage the circuit boards and make them less likely to function properly in the future.
Programming
The car key fob of today does more than unlock and start the car, it's also a remote control for various systems. It can be used to adjust your seat and mirror settings, setting your radio's preferences and climate control as well as a host of others adapted to the driver's preferences. These smart key fobs could be damaged due to a variety of factors. Sometimes replacing the battery can fix the problem but in some cases, reprogramming your key fob is required.
It's not that difficult to change the programming of the fob of your key, and you can do it from the comfort of home or at work. First, lock your car and ensure that the keys are in it. Press and hold both "Unlock", "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons on your key fob at the same time until you hear the chime, or the lock cycle. This will reset the connection between the key fob and your vehicle.
Remove the backup metal key from your fob. Set it aside in a secure location. Move the back cover of your fob towards the center of it to give it a slight lift and allow you to remove it. Replace the fob's key with an CR2032 battery which you can buy from our Golden Valley parts section or at local hardware stores and supermarkets in Minnetonka and St Louis Park.
Keyless Entry
Modern key fobs come with various benefits, from convenience to safety. You can open your trunk and car doors by pressing a button on the fob that sends the radio frequency signal to a receiver inside your vehicle. This system has its disadvantages.
Certain thieves have designed devices that can intercept the signals from your keys and duplicate them to serve as an "key" to open and starting your vehicle. You can safeguard yourself by placing your key fob in an enclosed protection case (known as Faraday pouches) which limits the distance that frequencies from the fob's location. They are available at the majority of auto parts stores for less than PS10.
Some systems also permit you to enter the car without the push button. When you are near the door's handle, the vehicle will automatically lock and unlock the door if your keys are in its fob.
Key fobs can also help managers and owners of businesses to take greater control. They can be used to authorize certain employees to access certain areas within your building or facility during specific shift times. By a single click you can revoke entry access to a lost employee or even terminate the employee. This tool is particularly useful for warehouses and other structures which require higher levels of security.
Calling

Many of the newer key fobs have hidden functions that make life easier for car owners. For instance, a CR auto editor, for instance, walked out to the Honda Accord he was driving and found that all of the windows had been rolled down automatically while the owner was at home. This isn't ideal especially if you're driving in a snowstorm, or rainstorm.
The Model 3 key fob is equipped with a variety of amazing features. These include the ability to summon the vehicle and auto-park it by pressing the button. Another neat function is the panic button which a driver can press during a terrifying situation, like when a burglar enters the home. A Tesla spokesperson says that this might deter the criminal, and notify neighbors.
Replace the battery inside your key fob by a new CR 2032 (available from local hardware stores as well as large-box retailers). Reinstall the bottom cover of the key fob, and press it hard until you hear snap. Once the fob has been activated you can test its capabilities by unlocking and locking your car.
A duplicate key fob could also be helpful to give to friends or family members so that they can use their own Driver profile with the settings they prefer. You don't need to be concerned about your partner or sibling changing the mirror position or the climate control settings, or the seat position you prefer.
